U16 Girls: Cumbria 0 Durham 12
Off to a good start
Durham began their 2016-17 NCSFA campaign, and their hopes of qualifying for the national competition, with victory over Cumbria.
Frenchfields in Penrith, the venue for this fixture, was in excellent condition. The day was also enhanced by the warm, sunny weather which made it perfect for watching and playing football.
Although the scoreline suggested a one-sided game the first half was evenly contested. However, Durham were more clinical in their finishing.
Durham quickly settled into their game by taking the lead in the 4th minute. For a spell the game fluctuated from end to end but when necessary both goalkeepers, in Durham’s case Dominyka Podziute, successfully negated any efforts on goal.
The visitors took control of the game from the 17th minute when they scored 3 times in 4 minutes.
Two further goals shortly before the interval through Ellie Gutcher and emergency full back Sarah Clifford gave Durham a commanding half time lead.
A spell of 4 goals in 5 minutes just before the mid-point of the second half knocked the confidence form the home team. It was during this period of the match that Beth Middlemas and Jenny Ashton completed their hat tricks. Jenny also added a fourth.
Ellie Gutcher became the third Durham player to score a hat trick when she picked up a clearance from Dominyka Podziute and finished in style.
The final goal, with 3 minutes remaining, was started by goalkeeper Sarah Clifford who played the ball to Jael Anderson. From midfield Jael continued moving forward then fed Sharna Wilkinson who successfully concluded the move.
Even though the Cumbrian girls suffered a heavy defeat they never gave up and were only denied a late goals due to a flamboyant, acrobatic save from Sarah Clifford and a well-timed sliding tackle from Alexis Prest.
