International recognition for former Heworth Grange pupil
Posted by: allan

Drew Hodgson (Heworth Grange, Gateshead) made his international U19 futsal debut in August for England in the Montaigu Futsal Cup. Drew was introduced to futsal in PE and represented Heworth Grange in Gateshead Schools FA competitions, he signed for Newcastle Futsal Club (formerly Durham Futsal Club) in 2017. He became a key member of the Newcastle squad as they gained promotion to the FA Super League in 2018 and also was nominated to attend the FA's Regional Talent Centre in January 2018. After a successful season of development he was selected in the Young Lions squad which travelled to Montaigu (France) to compete in a four nations tournament at the Complexe Sportif Max Bossis Arena.

Spain beat Montenegro 15-0 in the opening semi-final and Drew was heavily involved as England defeated France 3-2 in their semi-final. The final was always going to be a huge challenge for England as they lined up against a side with a lot of heritage and experience. Spain won the final with a 12-0 victory but the experience was priceless for Drew and the England squad as it gave them an indication of where they are at and where they need to get to. Drew has now moved into higher education where he will continue his futsal development with Northumbria University and he is aiming to be selected for the U19's trip to Portugal in December.

As the game continues to grow in England, The FA are developing a strong and sustainable elite youth pathway that players from the Durham County Schools FA programme will be able to access.
