U16 boys: Durham 1 Cleveland 2 (aet)

Durham suffer extra time defeat
Posted by: allan

Durham were eliminated from the ESFA U16 Boys Inter-county Trophy following defeat by Cleveland in what was a closely contested match.

The game flowed from end to end but it was Cleveland that broke the deadlock in the 25th minute following a good left footed strike from Luke McCall.

Durham thought they had equalised 5 minutes later, but the goal was disallowed for and infringement on the Cleveland goalkeeper.

On 35 minutes Durham had an excellent opportunity to make it 1-1 the shot for goal was hurried and completely missed the target.

Durham maintained their ascendancy into the second half. Ten minutes after half time a 25m strike from Cameron Brewis rattled the Cleveland crossbar. Five minutes later an Oliver McCulley left footed drive hit the post.

Durham were eventually rewarded for their efforts in the 60th minute. A cross from the left was neatly guided into the net by Daniel Flude.

Durham never capitalised upon the momentum gained by equalising. Cleveland finished the second half the stronger side but were unable to take advantage their superiority.

The game was settled in the first minute of extra time. Play began down the Cleveland left then the ball was eventually moved to the right where Gary Mitchell had space and time to slide the ball passed the advancing Durham goalkeeper into the net.
