Title: U16 Boys: South Yorkshire 2 Durham 4
Late burst of goals secures victory

Durham travelled to Doncaster to play South Yorkshire for their opening Northern Counties East League fixture and achieved a notable victory with 3 goals coming in the final 10 minutes.

The visitors thought they had taken the lead in the fifth minute when a free kick was headed home but was disallowed for a push on a South Yorkshire defender.

Durham continued in their search for an opening goal and were rewarded in the 12th minute. Charlie Hindson’s perfectly placed pass for Adam Lennox to run on to then score.

South Yorkshire were denied, in the 15th minute, by excellent defending. From a right wing cross a South Yorkshire header was goal bound. Dan Pringle, who showed good awareness to the situation, was able to sprint back and head the ball clear.

The home team then began to dominate possession but did not threaten the Durham goal, so the visitors were able to maintain their one goal lead through to half time.

After the interval South Yorkshire kept up their late first half momentum but also put greater pressure on Durham so that the visitors were frequently making errors.

For their efforts South Yorkshire were rewarded in the 68th minute. The visitors conceded a corner, which they managed to clear but not far enough. The ball fell to South Yorkshire and the player’s excellent strike from about 20m flew into the net.

South Yorkshire’s possible revival was soon dashed as Durham netted three times in an 8-minute spell.

Three minutes after South Yorkshire had equalised Durham were awarded a free kick, which was delivered to perfection by Charlie Hindson. Josh Crews timed his run precisely and his glancing header beat the keeper.

With 3 minutes of the match remaining Charlie Hindson and Dan Frude combined well before feeding Gabriel Berwick who increased Durham’s lead.

As the match entered the final minute Charlie Hindson was once again involved in the move. His pull back from the bye line found Adam Lennox who guided the ball into the net with his right foot for his second goal thus securing victory for Durham.

South Yorkshire made the score 4-2 in the 2nd minute of added time when a free kick was deflected into the goal.

This Durham win halted a run of 4 defeats in all competitions.
