Durham suffer defeat and fail to finish top
Durham, having already qualified for the Northern Counties semi-finals, went into their final game against Cleveland needing a victory as well as scoring 2 goals to finish top of the group and gain home advantage.
Cleveland opened the scoring in the 17th minute. The ball was played to a Cleveland forward on the right wing who was in an offside position. As he was ahead of the Durham defenders this gave him a head start in the race towards goal and he finished with an excellent strike.
Durham were on level terms three minutes later. A splendid cross field pass from the left found Charlie Hindson wide on the right. He cut inside and from 25m his left footed shot found the net.
Three minutes before half time Cleveland regained the lead. A quickly taken short corner was played into the danger area. At the far post a Cleveland player rose unchallenged and headed home.
Cleveland were much the better side in the second half and deservedly increased their lead in the 58th minute. Durham once again failed to defend a corner. This time the corner was played to the near post where a Cleveland player was able to guide the ball, from a tight angle, into the net.
Durham's misery was complete in the 66th minute when they conceded a penalty, which was successfully converted.
A poor second half performance led to this defeat for Durham.
In the semi-final Durham will be away to the winners of the West League.
