Report

The Durham County Schools Football Association Futsal Finals were staged at the Beacon of Light in Sunderland on Wednesday 27 February 2019.

The finals day featured 198 players from 22 school teams who had all previously found success in their individual association competitions. Bishop Auckland, Chester-le-Street, Washington Derwentside, East Durham, Gateshead and Sunderland all staged intra-association competitions to produce finalists at five different age groups. In each of the age categories teams competed in a round robin with the top two sides playing off for the trophy in a county final. Success for the U13 (Tanfield School) and U15 (North Durham Academy) winners also ensured qualification for the regional round of the ESFA’s inaugural schools futsal competitions.

Thank you to Andrew Powell (Parkside), Michael Leighton (Oxclose) and Paul Vaudrey (Shotton Hall) for all their hard work in successfully organising their association competitions. Thank you to the staff at the Foundation of Light for their fantastic hospitality and support throughout the day. Thank you to the competition sponsor The Education Network who for the second successive season provided the medals and in doing so reinforced their commitment to supporting schools’ futsal. Thank you to Laura Pye (Futsal Officer) and Daniel McElhone (Football Development Officer) from Durham FA for providing senior match officials and for assisting with the delivery of the event. Thanks also to the young leaders from Heworth Grange School who volunteered to officiate and did a very professional job. Finally, thank you to County Chairman, Geoff Wainwright, who presented the trophies and medals to all the finalists.

Schools futsal in our county is continuing to grow and hopefully the success of this year’s event will inspire more schools and more associations to get on board with a view to making the 2019-20 competition even more successful.
