Durham beaten by cup holders
Durham were unable to prevent Lancashire from continuing their superb run in the ESFA Play Station U14 Inter-county Trophy. The Red Rose county have now reached the semi-final for the 5th consecutive season and are unbeaten in this competition since losing the final in 2012.
Durham were the early leaders. An Erin Nicholson shot from 20m was not held by the Lancashire goalkeeper. Grace Boyes, following up, knocked the loose ball into the net.
Nicolle Scott, in the 17th minute, made an excellent save, diving to her right, to preserve Durham’s lead. However, 2 minutes later were rewarded for their endeavours with a super goal. A pass from Alyssa Mae-Aherne found Aimee Hodgson wide on the right. Aimee raced down the wing then sent over an accurate cross which found Tahnee Lucas who confidently headed home.
In the final minute of the first half Durham almost regained the lead. A corner, from the right, reached Jasmine McQuade at the back post. Her volley was smartly caught by a well-positioned Lancashire keeper.
After the restart, Lancashire began to dominate paly and their pressure paid dividends in the 50th minute. Kaitlin Woodhead crossed from the left. The ball sped across the face of the goal. Grace Mills, hovering at the far post, fired home to give Lancashire the lead.
A minute later Lancashire should have added a third but the attempt was put over the crossbar.
With 8 minutes remaining Grace Boyes had an opportunity to equalise when she broke through but very good defensive work from Lancashire prevented Durham from the levelling the scores.
Sixty seconds after Durham’s chance Lancashire increased their lead when a strike from Alyssa Mae-Aherne hit the crossbar. The rebound fell to an unmarked Tahnee Lucas who easily scored her second.
Substitute goalkeeper Catherine Wilson made an excellent double save with 2 minutes left but was unable to prevent Tahnee Lucas from completing her hat trick with only seconds remaining.
