Durham beaten in NCSFA final

The inaugural NCSFA U14 Girls Inter-county Final between Durham and Lancashire was played on a fine April evening on the new all-weather pitch at Maiden Castle, Durham.

The first half ebbed and flowed with both teams having good opportunities to score.

Kayley Dunn was called into action in the 14th minute when she tipped a header, from a Lancashire corner, over the bar. A minute later a misplaced clearance from the Lancashire goalkeeper went straight to Libbi McInnes midway in the Lancashire half. Libbi advanced on goal then rounded the keeper but her attempt missed the target. In the 17th minute once more Kayley Dunn came to Durham’s rescue with a fine save, diving to her right, to prevent Lancashire form taking the lead. Durham responded 2 minutes later when Libbi McInnes broke clear of the away defence but her shot, from distance, was pushed away for a corner.

With the interval only 5 minutes away Kayley Dunn made another excellent save as she deflected a Lancashire effort onto the crossbar. Unfortunately, 2 minutes later Kayley was unable to hold a cross and Beth McDonald was on hand to put the Red Rose county ahead.

Eight minutes after the break Lancashire increased their lead. Good play between Emily Slater and Alyssa Mae Aherne in midfield created an opening for Alyssa Mae to shoot. Her shot was parried by Kayley Dunn. The ever alert Tigana Gent, following up, guided the ball into the empty net.

In the 48th minute Durham thought they had reduced the deficit. A clearance from Kayley Dunn found Rebecca Bell who passed to Libbi McInnes. As Libbi neared the penalty area she placed the ball over the advancing keeper. Lancashire defender, Jessica Hodge sprinted towards her own goal and managed to hook the ball to safety.

Lancashire took control of the game from the 51st minute when they added a third goal. Durham lost the ball in midfield and Lancashire quickly broke. The move was clinically finished by Tigana Gent who scored her second goal.
