U18s: Cleveland 3 Durham 1

Qualification for semi-final spot fades

Posted by: allan

Durham went into this crucial fixture, needing a victory to maintain their push for a semi-final place, with an understrength side and suffered accordingly.

Neither side were able to get onto the scoresheet in the first half and Durham gave a below par performance.

Cleveland opened the scoring in the 50th minute. Fifteen minutes later the Teessiders were 2-0 ahead.

Joe Ames reduced the arrears with 10 minutes remaining when he was fouled in the penalty area, which he duly converted.

Cleveland regained their 2-goal advantage in the final minute of the match.

Durham, through Jonny Langley, scored in added time but the goal was disallowed for offside.

With this defeat Durham's hopes of qualifying for the Northern Counties semi-finals are extremely slim. Currently Durham are second with seven points and have one game to play, which is at home to, group leaders, Northumberland. South Yorkshire (7 points) and Cleveland (6 points) also have games to play.
