Under 16 Girls Cleveland 4 Durham 0:

Cleveland excel to beat Durham

Posted by: allan

Durham travelled to Billingham for their final East league game needing three points to be assured of home advantage in the Northern Counties semi-final. However, they came away with nothing due to an excellent team performance from Cleveland who thoroughly deserved their victory.

Durham were unable to deal with the pace of the Cleveland forward line. It was from one of these speedy attacks that Cleveland opened the scoring in the 18th minute.

Cleveland made it 2-0 after 30 minutes when Durham were unable to deal with a corner at the near post.

A minute after half time Cleveland increased their lead when Durham were unable to clear their area following a good cross.

It could have been much worse for the visitors two minutes later when the home team thought they had added a fourth, but it was disallowed for offside.

Once more Durham were left in the wake of Cleveland's quick forward line and resulted in a fourth goal being scored in the 64th minute.

Although this defeat was a setback for Durham they should still qualify for the semi-finals as Cleveland play Northumberland in the final group match. Cleveland will finish top with a draw or a victory in this crucial fixture. Northumberland can reach the semi-finals at Cleveland's expense if they beat the Teessiders 5-0. With this scenario Durham will finish top. If Northumberland win by a margin of six goals they will top the group with Durham second.
