The league began in season 1994-95 with 12 teams. Since 2002-03 two regionalised leagues have been used. Season 2008-09 had 19 participating teams.
Special Rules
- Players shall be over the age of 16 years and under 19 years at midnight between the previous 31st August and 1st September, and in full time education.
- The league will be limited to a maximum of 12 (i.e. 11 games). If applications exceed this then two regionalised leagues (maxiumum of 14 games)Â will be set up (to ease travelling) with a play-off at the end of the season.
- Schools with a 6th form of over 350 pupils will only be allowed to enter 2 separate teams, a Year 12 team and a Year 13 team.
- Students on courses based on day release are ineligible to take part in this competition.
- Students who have enrolled at an establishment as part of a football academy programme are ineligible to participate in this competition save for the Albert Knox Trophy. Guidance note: This applies to schools that offer a Football Academy, Football Development Programme or Sports Academy with a football section. Students who undertake 6 or more hours of football training at the school per week (excluding competition fixtures and strength and conditioning sessions) are not eligible to participate in this competition and should be entered into the Albert Knox Trophy.
